What Grinds My Gears

Howdy guys. Been awhile since I’ve been of a mind to blog, but the upcoming Dark Angels release got me thinking down a track that has me really annoyed.  I was looking at the new models that are on deck, and it got me thinking about the various model/codex releases over the last few years and I came to a conclusion. That being that Space Wolves (my pet army) got seriously screwed by GW on models.

The Space Wolf Codex got exactly two new kits when it was released, the Space Wolf Pack, and Space Wolf Terminators.  And ignoring the independent characters that was it.  You had Canis Wolfborn there to tease you with the idea of a unit of Thunderwolf Cavalry (at $50 per model), but otherwise nothing.  It was 2 ½  years later before GW released kits for those models.

So Codex: Space Wolves got a grand total of 4 plastic kits (and I only count the Fenrisian Wolf kit grudgingly), and had to wait nearly 3 years for their big splashy kit.  Contrast this with the following model releases.

Imperial Guard – 10 Kits
                Valkyrie
                Catchan Command
                Cadian Command
                Ratlings (Resculpt)
                Sentinels (Recut)
                Leman Russ (Recut)
                Demolisher (Recut)
                Hellhound(Recut)
                Chimera (Recut)
                Manticore

Tyrannids – 8 Kits
                Tyrand Guard
                Hive Guard
                Trygon
                Gargoyles
                Tervigon
                Venomthrope
                Pyrovores
                Raveners

Blood Angels – 4 Kits (All with Codex)
                Death Company
                Sanguinary Guard
                Baal Predator
                Stormraven

Dark Eldar - ~ 15Kits
                The Whole Damned Army

Grey Knights – 3.5 Kits (All with Codex)
                Strike Squad
                GK Terminators
                Dreadknight
                (Access to Stormraven)

Necrons – 9 Kits
                Stalker
                Lychguard
                Immortals
                Ghost Arc
                Night Scythe
                Command Barge
                Tomb Blades
                Wraiths
                Spyders

Chaos – 6Kits
                Mutilators
                Cultists
                Helldrake
                Raptors
                Forgefiend
                Chosen

Dark Angels – 5 Kits (All With Codex)
                Niphilim Fighter
                Land Speeder Vengeance
                Knight Terminators
Ravenwing Bikes (Recut)
Ravenwing Command
???

This bugs me.  Now I know that power armor codices all piggy back off the Codex: SM model range, but I can’t help but feel annoyed that Space Wolves got so markedly little, and had to wait so long for it.
On top of which is my pet game-play complaint. Space Wolves are the only codex released since 2006 that doesn’t have a flyer/flying MC within their codex.

The 6 following codices have them (including DA), and 4 preceding codices have them thanks to WD updates.   I know I can get the odd flyer with allies, but it would be nice to have something in my codex.  Even if it were only access to the crappy, crappy Stormtalon, at least it would be something I could take more than one of.

The only other codices with that problem are Templar, Eldar, Tau, and Sisters of Battle and which are all on deck for the next couple years.  Space Wolves likely won’t see another codex for another 4-5 years.  And in my book that’s way too damned long.

To sum up.  Space Wolves got fewer kits than anyone but GK (and the hell with them); had to wait almost 3 years to get two of them; their big fancy kit (TWC) was one of the late kits; and their codex is completely shut out of one of the main mechanics of the new edition (fliers) and is likely to remain so until a new codex arrives.  And that Gentlemen, really grinds my gears.

BPR6 Podisode 11

HOLD THE PRESS!

Not really I just wanted to say that. After several months of scheduling conflicts and personal priorities we are back up and running. We recorded the latest episode (#11) last night so it should be up as soon as Mike gets the editing done. We apologize for the low audio quality as we recently changed our recording technique and have not worked out all the bugs.

40k Team Tournament at the Rusty Scabbard

This will be a team tournament. Teams of 2. You can choose your teammate. It will not be random this tme. We will need a minimum of 10 people (5 teams) for this to work.
You are a coalition, not allies so you and your parner can bring what ever armies you want. Normal rules for allies apply (good luck fitting
them in the points limit)

1000pts/player, you can not share extra ponts with your team mate
3 rounds @ 2 hrs depending on turnout

Entry will be $20 per team.

1st place will get 60% of the prize support.
2nd place will ge the remaining 40%.
If more people show up there will be further division of support.

Lists will be submitted to me by email (jsmoegue@uky.edu) by Friday, 9/21/12.  We will not wait for people to show up late and make a list.

I will be playing so I will post my partners and my lists the Thursday before to be fair. That means everyone gets to see what we are bringing before any of the lists are sent to me.

We will start promptly at 11 so please arrive by 10:30.

There will be a 45 min lunch break between rounds 2 and 3

Rulings will be handled by the group. There is not one of us that is an expert on 40K so it is nice to have multiple points of view. If you need to have a rule clarified for list building please post it so it can be cleared up before hand.

If you don't have a partner and would like to play send us a email and we will try to find you someone ^_^.

Hope to see you There!!!!

Any Question can be sent to Mike.hoskins@me.com and/or jsmoegue@uky.edu

Hellbrute: Rules, Stats, and Options

via Faeit 212 (a Must Remain Anonymous Source)

"
I just want to clarify that while it is listed as having a Power Fist and not a Dreadnought Close Combat Weapon, because it is a Walker it does not suffer from the Unwieldy special rule, that's why it's simplified in the codex entry.

120 points

It's 12/11/10
Str 6, ws 4, bs4, i4

Multi-Melta / Power Fist (with inbuilt combi-bolter)

can swap the Multi-Melta for a butcher-cannon, or twin reaper auto cannons (which is pretty cool, since that's an entire riflemen in one arm, but with less range), twin-linked lascannon or a twin-linked heavy flamer.
can swap combi-bolter for a meltagun or heavy flamer

Has rampage

Mark of Khorne: Rage USR
Mark of Nurgle: 5+ restore a hull point OR repair immobilized / weapon destroyed at the start of a turn.  Does not let it get back up after having been killed unlike Unholy Vigor.
Mark of Slaanesh: Sonic scream, gives it offensive/defensive grenades
Mark of Tzeench: flame weapons (if it has any) are +1 strength and -1 AP (heavy flamers are AP3."

Ill Take 3.

6th Edition Starter Set: Dark Vengence?

via beerogre at Beasts of War

 Chaos Cultists are in!

That’s right all you Chaos players… I refused point blank to believe that GW would ever release Chaos Cultist, but they have. The Dark Vengeance boxed set (did I not mention the name previously?) will have 2 units of 10 Chaos Cultist models, one armed with auto-guns (with a shotgun & CC weapon for the leader and a Heavy Stubber support trooper) and one with auto-pistol & CC weapon (with 2 CC weapons for the leader and a Flamer support model).

The Chaos Cultist look like everything you’ve ever wanted for Chaos. They’re bound in rags, with metal half-masks and weapons that suit the cobbled-together, improvised look that you expect from the dregs of Chaos.

But that’s not all for those naughty Chaos worshippers; they’re getting a unit of 6 Chosen…elite Chaos Space Marines, armed with a variety of Power Weapons (a Maul on the Sergeant, a Power Fist, a Chain Axe and a set of Lightning Claws by the look of things). The remaining Chosen are armed with Boltguns, but this bodes well for the potential that these exemplars of Chaos might get some more customisable options in the upcoming new Chaos Marines codex.

To lead your forces, you have the obligatory Chaos Lord, armed with a Power Sword & Plasma Pistol. His pose is a bit static, but that is only in comparison to the much more animated Chosen.

Lastly… what would Chaos be without something big and menacing to bring to the table? Well… how about a brand new model… the Hellbrute!

The massive Hellbrute model comes equipped with a Multi-Melta & Power Fist. Suggesting that this isn’t a Dreadnought replacement, but is in fact a huge suit of specialist armour crewed by a Chaos Marine (or more likely a Champion). Actually, the model resembles a huge suit of Terminator Armour with lots of cool Chaos gribbly bits… I’m hoping for a Monstrous Creature that acts like the Dreadknight… what about all you Chaos fans? What would you like it to be?

But what about the Dark Angels?

They haven’t been left wanting and with a new codex (no doubt in their future) there is quite a bit to have a look at.

Firstly, they wouldn’t be Space Marines without the obligatory 10 man Tactical Squad. However, the Dark Angel Tactical-Squad has a twist… it’s got Plasma!

The ordinary Space Marine grunts come sporting a Boltgun, but the squad also has a Plasma Gunner and a Heavy Plasma Cannon model giving support… and just to round out the theme… a Plasma Pistol/Chainsword Sergeant.

Looks like that squad will be getting hot!

The Tactical Squad also has a mixture of poses, this time around. Some of the Bolter-totting Marines are holding their ubiquitous weapon at jaunty angles to make the squad look a bit more animated… and it works too… good job GW!

The Marine side wouldn’t be Space Marines without a smattering of Terminators… so you get a squad of 5 of them. It’s a pretty standard squad, with Stormbolter/Power Fist, with a Power Sword Sergeant. However, you do get an Assault Cannon and Chainfist option… and true to previous form… the models now come in a variety of more dynamic poses with the squad sergeant even sporting Wings but thankfully no nipple armour!

The last squad in the box is a unit of 3 Space Marine (or Ravenwing) Bikers, with Sergeant and one Biker sporting Bolt Pistol/Chainsword and the third Biker packing a Plasma Gun. The models look similar to previous Ravenwing Bikers (with that big wing banner on the back) and are probably the least inspiring out of the box.

But let’s not end on a low… let’s talk about the Dark Angel Triple Whammy… 3 Heroes!

The box will contain a Dark Angels Company Master (Balthasar)… resplendent with his erect Power Sword!

A Dark Angels Librarian… with a slightly less impressive looking Force Sword… and a limited edition Interrogator Chaplain, who’s Power Armour (including smoking exhaust details) and embellished robe might be the most ostentatious model in the box!

That’s all the models in the box… but what about the Rulebook?

I know many of you have been planning to buy the box (price TBC) in order to get your hands on the smaller rulebook. So rest easy… there will be one in the box.

There will also be templates and a new How to Play Dark Vengeance booklet, that allows you to jump right into the action.

40k 6th Edition

So the title of this post is not that descriptive. You know I am going to address 6th edition and probably assume it is going to be about the rules and I am going to bash them like so many other people are doing right now. Well you would be partly correct. I am going to talk a little about the new rules but there will be no bashing from me.

People seem to hate what they don't understand. With 6th edition in its infancy, people, mostly those on the internet who decide their opinion is worth something, have not had enough time to play, evaluate, and make an educated statement regarding this edition. I have played about 15 games myself and still have no clue what types of armies are going to be competitive. I can tell you that within those 15 games I have played (and played against) a variety of armies and army types and they all seem to perform well.

Daemons: I want to give GW a big round of applause. I spend a great deal of time in forums checking rumors. While almost everyone was certain we would be getting plastic plague bearers, the addition of new unit choices and a revision/addition to the daemon codex seemed to go unnoticed until the white dwarf was released. I hope that this becomes a trend. This was all a big and complete surprise.

Over the past several weeks my attitude towards GW has done a complete 180. Despite all the bitching and moaning we do as players you have to give it to them. In reality they are a fantastic miniatures company and seem to be getting their act together. Thank you GW!

Forgeworld brings us the Horus Heresy?

Thats right gamers, Forgeworld, the people who bring us such awesome things that put regular Games Workshop stuff to shame, are now bringing us the Horus Heresy as a series of campaign books.

Hopefully they will give us rules for Primarchs and awesome models for them as well.

I am so excited for this that I am pissing blood!

Command Squad w/ 4x Plasma & Astropath
140 Pts

There Is No Primarch But Russ, And The Long Fangs Are His Prophets

Well everybody.   After a fair bit of crunching here is my revised 1850 all comers list for Space Wolves.  For the moment I’m keeping chunks of the core design intact until I can get some serious playtest games in to figure out what is and isn’t working.   For the moment this is designed as a pure Space Wolves force, to see how well the codex can stand on its own in the new edition.  Also, because I’m certain that some tournaments are going to ban allies on principle just to keep shenanigans down.

6th ed recap

Well 6th ed has been out for 4 days now and there are all kinds of changes. However most of them have not been bad,  i have played 2 games so far and they have been a lot of fun. Below is the best rules recap i could find that helps those of you (like me) who are still waiting on your rule book to arrive by mail (thank you GW for being extremely slow).

this is going to hurt......

6th Edition - Shooting Vs Assault Preliminary Analysis

So, after a full read on the codex and a couple of test games here are some initial thoughts I’m having on the 6th edition balance between shooting and assaulting.
Per general internet wisdom shooting was better than assault in 5th Edition.  Based on my read of the new rules the gap has grown wider now that we've moved to 6th Edition.  If shooting was not formerly better than assault it most certainly is now.  Evidence following.
I’ve listed many of the rules changes and how I feel they impact the balance between shooting and assault.  These don’t cover all the rules changes that could affect things, but they cover the majority of the big ones.  Or at least the ones I can think of right now.

6th Edition Midnight Release/5th Edition Last Hurrah

The Rusty Scabbard held an event on the night before 6th Edition was released! Players gathered to play 1000 point lists from 5th edition as a last hurrah and farewell. We had a great time and played up until midnight when the 6th edition rulebook was finally available for purchase! These are some pics from the night, some of the battles and people receiving their book!

Preliminary Thoughts & Math on Vehicles in 6th

So folks.   I've been throwing math at the new vehicle damage charts.  The results are not pretty.  Not pretty at all.  I've calculated the number of hits at Strength X required to wreck/explode a vehicle at AV-Y, and compared it from 5th Edition to 6th Edition.  Here's a few things that are shaking out. (Note:  I got wordy so this went from a FB post to a full-on blog post).
As a note I've assumed 3 Hull Points on all vehicles below AV 14, and 4 Hull Points on all AV 14.
The vehicle damage rules are as follows to the best of my knowledge.    Glances remove hull points, but do nothing else.  Penetrations remove hull points AND roll on the vehicle damage table.
Damage table is as follows:
1-2          Shaken
3              Stunned
4              Weapon Destroyed
5              Immobilized
6+           Explodes

The End is Near

With 6th edition just around the corner, I can't help but wonder for the future of 40k. What will change, what will stay the same, will it be better or will it be worse? With so many rumors coming out it seems like 6th might be a different game all together.

Painting, Painting, and Painting some more.

Anyone who knows me can tell you the two following things in regards to Warhammer 40k and other miniature gaming like Fantasy, Warzone, etc.

#1. I play a damned good game.
#2. I never paint my miniatures.

I'm not here to talk about #1, but instead #2.

BPR6 episode 9 delay

So, we have had some set backs and delays in recording the next episode. Since this was supposed to be an Adepticon recap episode we wanted all members to be present. These delays are mainly due to work and school conflicts. Hopefully we will record this weekend and have it out soon after. Thank you for your patience.

AIR BRUSH POWER!!!!

Hello demons and demonettes, it's been two week since Adepticon and I have done nothing but play with the shiny toys I got while up there. For those of you who dont know and were not able to go to Adepticon, Badger (the airbrush company) had a booth up at Adepticon and was selling their products at a ridiculous markdown, all sales were cash only and they were not giving out receipts (FORSHADOWING!!!!)  So most of the people bought one as well as me. So this week and last I decided to bust out the air brush and give it a try (after watching about 5 hours worth of video on how to use them). I decided to start with a Razorback for two reasons: 1) I needed to paint one and 2) it seemed to be the easiest to paint.

Adepticon recap

So, it has been more than a week since our return home from Adepticon and it is time to reflect. I have been going to conventions for years but this was my first time to Adepticon so this will not only be a recap of how the team did but my general impression/evaluation of the con.

Adepticon!!!!!

Sensei Xeno here coming to you straight from Adepticon where I'm waiting in line to get the highly coveted Adepticon shield bag from Battlefoam. When I arrived at the Westin to check in there were only 3 to 4 people in line. Less than 30 min later, the size of the line had grown to 30 or 40 people, and the line keeps growing.

So the rest of Team Scabbard and I are now sitting in line for the next 3 hours in hopes that we all get one.

More to come from Adepticon!

Adepticon 2012

Were here.

Dark Eldar Update

Following in Duncan's foot steps, I too have a full painted army for 40k for the first time. I stole this image from the pics Mike took from the Maul at the Mall event. It is my 1850 list that includes:

1 Archon: shadow field and agonizer
3 squads of 4 trueborn: 4 blasters each and venoms (double cannons, flicker field, night shield)
3 squads of 5 warriors: 1 blaster each and venoms (double cannons, flicker field, night shield)
1o witches with hydra gauntlet in raider (flicker field)
9 witches with hydra gauntlet in raider (flicker field)
3 ravagers (flicker field, night shield)

I think it is a very balanced list game wise and got above average paint scores so I am very happy with how it turned out. I am however sad at one thing. Before deciding on the pain scheme I did two things. First I looked at all the colors of paint I have never used, and second I looked at pics of other DE armies on the interwebs so as to avoid having an army similar to others. You know what happened.....all the DE armies at the event were purple! I guess I missed the memo.

I am looking forward to adding an extra 150 pts of painted minis to get it to the 2000 pt level needed for the ATC. That is assuming I don't change my mind and decide to take Daemons between now and then. This is only about half the models I have for the DE so I have a lot of work ahead of me if I want them all painted.

Betty? Posting? Madness.

Alright, Betty here. Long time listener, first time caller. Anyway, I've pretty much been the lazy one on the team for the past few months or so. Haven't really done much for the team. That changed today with the first of my painted Sons of Medusa:

So I would just like to say one thing. Screw you Mike, screw you Jack, Seth and Duncan, you two are alright.

After almost 20 years, I have a painted army.

When I got into playing Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Fantasy, some time back in either 1992 or 1993, I played two different armies. In Fantasy I played Dwarves (Not Dwarfs because I, unlike GW know how to spell the word), I played Dwarves because I like beards, I like Dwarves, and I still do. In 40k I started off with Blood Angels, probably because they were included in the box and because they had this mystique about them of being freakish space vampires.

When you are that age, things like that are cool.

Tournament prep

Well its friday and at this point im currently trying to get ready for 4 deferent events at the same time, the maul in the mall, adepticon championship, team tourney, and fantasy team tourney. For those of you that know me know at this time with maul in the mall and adepticon being so close i start to freak out a little... well i freak out alot. i'm in the mad dash to get my display boards done (all 4 of them >.<), getting my model painted, constantly staring at army builder wondering if there is a way i can fit just one more psycannon in my list, and wondering how my teams mate stuff is coming. but with maul at the mall being so close i have to take a step back from adepticon and focus on that tourney.

For those that don't know Maul in the Mall is a 1850 pt tournament in Cleveland TN hosted by dice head games, who always does an amazing job. I'm stuck between grey knight and space wolfs, but since i'm going to use this as a test for my adepticon list i think i'm going to take grey knights. i have  everything painted and my display board mostly done, but i keep making last min changes to my list which causes me to paint more. i'm sure like most of the tournaments i go to my list will not be finalized before, its become a tradition.

So who all is going to maul at the mall, hows your stuff coming, and do you have any pre tourney traditions like me freaking out?

Adepticon and other projects

Adepticon is closing in fast and there is still much to do. We have 2 teams participating in the Warhammer 40k team tournament. I can't say what army we are bringing but I can say that we have a lot of work to do on it. Models still need to be assembled and painted. Our display boards are not even close to being done. The second group hasn't even started. I've been tasked with the job since I don't have to build an army and don't plan to start it until 2 weeks before hand. Let's put it this way, I will be running around like a chicken with its head cut off.

In addition to the team tournament I am participating in The Battle for Piscina IV is a narrative event. Here are the details for the event:
  • The Battle for Piscina IV is a narrative event and you must bring a Dark Angels, Imperial Guard or Ork force to participate. (NO IG SPOTS LEFT)
  • Each participant will bring an army that will consist of 750 points or less.
  • Each participant will receive a Battle Briefing in advance that will outline the historical forces used in each scenario, how many points can be used, as well as any special rules or stratagems that will be used.
  • Participants will be modifying their army list throughout the event to suit the needs of each scenario.
  • Participants will be teamed up at times with others to meet the needs of the narrative.
  • The Battle for Piscina IV consists of four rounds of play. During each round you will be assigned a table and may have 1 or more team mates and foes. Not every battle will necessarily be equal.

For more information on this and historically accurate armies for the battle go to 2ndcitywarzone.blogspot.com.

I have no interest in Orks so I chose Dark Angels. Here is my 750 points:

Belial - thunder hammer and storm shield = 130

5 Deathwing terminators - thunder hammer and storm shield x 5 = 215

5 Deathwing terminators - thunder hammer and storm shield x 5 = 215

Devastator squad - 4 plasma cannons, sergeant has bolter = 190

I have all of the models except 3 plasma cannons. Now I just need to assemble and paint them.

However, the Dark Angels will have to wait a few weeks. I am still trying to finish my Dark Eldar. There are 3 ravagers, 1 raider, 3 blasterborn, and 10 witches that need paint first. I keep saying I'm behind on updates for them so at this point I am going to wait till the whole army is finished and post an army pic. Until next time.....

Space Wolf Project Log Update

Greeting All!! For those who don't recognize my usual online handle, this is Wooten. The Wooten of Wolves, Imperial Guard, and (most recently) Tau.

I had hoped to kick off my arrival to the blogosphere with a full spread of pictures of my ongoing obsession, my pre-Heresy Space Wolf army. However, I am sad to report that my wife has currently left town with the only cable capable of connecting my camera to my computer. And since I be in a blogging sort of mood, I'm gonna skip the picture show and move on to my project log.

As those who are member of the FB page are aware I like to post updates every so often of my progress on building and converting for my various armies.

It’s good for my morale. Lesson one kiddies. If you plan to convert an entire army, be prepared for everything to take FOR-FREAKING EVER!!!

As an example, I've spent most of the last 3 hours just building 3 infantry models. And these are to a design that I'm familiar with and comfy with. Ugh. But rant over, before I go on too long with it. On to the update.

It’s been about 2-3 weeks since the last update. Not fantastic progress, but not bad. Anyone who recalls the last list will note that the new releases did in fact jump to the head of the line. I couldn't resist having new kits to play around with. And new bits to feed the maw of conversion….Dear god. I'm almost depressed by how elated I got when I saw there were 6 brand new unarmoured heads for me to play around with in each box of thunderwolves (I bought 2).

Thats all for this round. With any luck I'll be able to get pictures up for the next round. Cheers All!!
